Xeriscaping or xeroscaping refer to landscaping and gardening in ways that reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental water or irrigation.  It is promoted in regions that do not have easily accessible, plentiful, or reliable supplies of fresh water.  Xeriscaping is a good alternative to various types of traditional gardening where low water usage is advantageous. 

Advantages to Xeriscaping
- Lower consumption of water supply
- Lower maintenance (no lawn to cut)
- When water restrictions are implemented, xeriscape plants tend to survive and thrive where some ornamental plants may be unable to adapt
- Can be more visually interesting than traditional flower gardens
